So what was the response to God's holiness...?
1 Then Job replied to the LORD :
2 "I know that you can do all things;
no plan of yours can be thwarted.
3 You asked, 'Who is this that obscures my counsel without knowledge?'
Surely I spoke of things I did not understand,
things too wonderful for me to know.
4 "You said, 'Listen now, and I will speak;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.'
5 My ears had heard of you
but now my eyes have seen you.
6 Therefore I despise myself
and repent in dust and ashes."
It appears that the heart of the response is a new realisation that God is both mysterious and all powerful. And also, that we are not. Job's presumption to deal with God on equal terms, is replaced by humility and confession.
In our worship, community and welcome...
What does humility look like for us at St Mary's? as individuals and as a church?
What does confession look like for us at St Mary's? as individuals and as a church?
Some prayers for reflection today...
O Lord our God,
you know us better than we know ourselves.
As we come before you now,
believers and doubters alike,
we all share a deep need,
for we are all lost without your grace.
Search us, O God, and know our hearts,
test us and know our troubled thoughts.
Give us true repentance.
Forgive us all our wrongs.
Transform us by your Spirit to live for you each day,
to learn to serve each other
and, through the grace of Jesus Christ our Lord,
to come at last to heaven. Amen.
It's the mystery
infinite holiness
and majesty
that draws me to your throne
It's my dependency
on your father-ness
your limitless
love that holds me there
It's your humility
total selflessness
and sacrifice
that draws me to your cross
It's my dependency
on your graciousness
your limitless
grace that holds me there
It's your constancy
always there-ness
warm embrace
that draws me into your arms
It's my dependency
on your gentleness
your limitless
patience that holds me there
